But here is what makes Human Design different from Western Astrology: you have two Suns. Not metaphorically. Mechanically. Your BodyGraph displays two columns of planetary positions side by side. The right column is your Personality, also called the Conscious Sun. The left column is your Design, also called the Unconscious Sun. Each one represents a different layer of who you are.

Your Conscious Sun (also called your Personality Sun) is your conscious identity. The part of you that says “I.” The part you can think about, talk about, and recognize as yourself. Your Unconscious Sun (also called your Design Sun) is your unconscious body. The part of you that runs underneath consciousness. Ra Uru Hu, who founded Human Design in 1987, taught that the Sun is the source of about 70 percent of your design’s energetic influence. This is the core idea that makes Human Design unique. You have two Sun positions, and they describe two different layers of you.

The Conscious Sun (Personality Sun). This is the part of you that says “I.” Your conscious identity. The way you experience yourself when you think about who you are. If you sit quietly and ask “what makes me, me?”, you are typically describing your Conscious Sun. It is what your mind recognizes as you.

The Conscious Sun is the part of your design you have direct access to. You can read about your Conscious Sun Gate and Line, and you will usually recognize yourself in the description. It tends to feel like reading a sentence you would have written about yourself. The Conscious Sun is where your conscious identity lives.

The Unconscious Sun (Design Sun). This represents your unconscious body and vehicle. The genetic inheritance you came in with. The parts of you that feel like family. The bodily, instinctive, physical aspects of who you are that operate beneath conscious awareness. Where the Conscious Sun says “I,” the Unconscious Sun says “us,” meaning the lineage your body came from.

Reading about your Unconscious Sun often feels different than reading about your Conscious Sun. The Unconscious Sun may describe something you have witnessed in yourself but never claimed. Things other people notice about you that you do not necessarily identify with. It is closer to the body than the mind. Closer to instinct than thought.

Both Suns together give you a complete picture. The Conscious Sun is what you think you are. The Unconscious Sun is what your body actually is. Most people are surprised by how accurate the Unconscious Sun reading is, even when it describes things they would not have said about themselves out loud.

A Sagittarius Sun in Western Astrology might be a specific Gate and Line in Human Design, with a different Gate for the Unconscious Sun. The Sagittarius identity is recognizable. In Human Design, the Earth is the second planetary activation on your BodyGraph, right below the Sun in both the Personality and Design columns. The Earth is the Sun’s polar opposite. It carries the Gate that sits directly across from your Sun Gate on the I Ching wheel.

Where the Sun is the transmission, the Earth is the grounding. Where the Sun says “what I am here to express,” the Earth says “what holds me here.” Together, your Sun and Earth gates describe both what you are reaching for and what keeps you embodied while you reach.
