Authority in Plain English
Your authority is how your body makes decisions correctly. Not your mind. Not your conditioning. The structural mechanism that lets you know what’s right for you, in this moment, in your body.
There are seven authorities in Human Design. One of them is yours. The one you have depends on which centers are defined in your chart and how they connect. Each authority has its own timing, its own signal, and its own discipline.
The body knows. The work is to know which instrument your body uses, and to trust it over the mental override that arrives a half-second later.
Definition: Authority in Human Design is the structural mechanism the body uses to make decisions correctly. Seven authorities exist — Sacral, Emotional (also known as Solar Plexus), Splenic, Ego (also known as Ego/Will Center), Self-Projected (also known as G-Center), Mental (also known as Environmental or Outer Authority), and Lunar (an outer authority unique to Reflectors). Each is associated with specific configurations of defined and undefined centers. Authority is determined in a priority order: if the Solar Plexus is defined, the authority is Emotional regardless of what else is defined; if not, the next priority is checked. Authority is one structural layer of the full Human Design chart, alongside the energy type, profile, defined gates and channels, and incarnation cross.
What Is Human Design Authority?
Your authority is the structural mechanism your body uses to make decisions correctly. It is determined by which centers are defined in your chart and which routes to the Throat are open. The authority tells you the right instrument for navigating decisions — and what timing to honor.
Six of the seven authorities are called inner authorities because they operate through a specific defined center in the body. One — Mental (also called Environmental or Outer) — operates outside the body, through environment and trusted advisors. And Lunar Authority is unique to Reflectors, operating on the moon’s roughly 29-day transit.
The work of using your authority is not complicated, but it is consistent: trust the instrument the body actually has, not the one you wish it had. The mind will always offer a second opinion. The mind is not the authority.
How Authority Is Determined
Authority is determined by which centers are defined in your chart. The strongest available signal becomes your authority. In a real chart-reading workflow, the system checks each possibility:
- Sacral Authority — if your Sacral Center is defined and your Solar Plexus is undefined
- Emotional Authority (Solar Plexus) — if your Solar Plexus is defined; this overrides every other inner authority signal
- Splenic Authority — if your Spleen is defined and the above are undefined
- Ego Authority (Ego/Will Center) — if your Heart/Will is defined and connected to the Throat, and the above are undefined
- Self-Projected Authority (G-Center) — if your G-Center is defined and connected to the Throat, and the above are undefined (Projector only)
- Mental Authority (Environmental / Outer) — if no defined center routes to the Throat (Projector only)
- Lunar Authority — if all nine centers are undefined (Reflector only)
The structural logic: the body uses the strongest available signal. Emotional Authority is the highest-priority signal because the emotional wave’s timing supersedes the other inner authorities when present. By the time the determination reaches Mental or Lunar, the body has no fast inner signal, so the authority operates differently — through environment, time, and trusted advisors.
The 7 Authorities
Seven authorities exist. Find yours below.
Sacral Authority
Trust the gut. The body knows first.
Sacral Authority belongs to Generators and Manifesting Generators with an undefined Solar Plexus — about half of the Generator family. The defined Sacral responds to specific yes/no stimulus in real time, usually as a low gut sound (“uh-huh” for yes, “uh-uh” for no) or as a felt rise or drop of energy. The response is immediate and final — no waiting period. The discipline is to convert big questions into specific binary asks the Sacral can engage with, and to act on the response before the mind overrides it.

Emotional Authority
Wait the wave. Clarity comes sober.
Emotional Authority — also known as Solar Plexus Authority — belongs to anyone with a defined Solar Plexus Center, roughly 50% of the population. The most common authority in Human Design. The Solar Plexus runs an emotional wave through high, low, and neutral states; truth lives at the neutral midpoint, after the wave has cycled. There is no truth in the now for Emotional Authority. The discipline is to wait through the full wave before committing to major decisions — sometimes hours, sometimes days, sometimes longer.

Splenic Authority
The spleen speaks once. Act the first time.
Splenic Authority belongs to Projectors and Manifestors with a defined Spleen and undefined Solar Plexus. The Spleen is the body’s awareness center — built for survival, instinct, taste, smell, and body-knowing. The signal is quiet, one-time, and pre-verbal. It does not repeat. The discipline is to develop the listening required to hear the whisper, and to act on the first signal before the mind talks the body out of it.

Ego Authority
Speak the want. Test the will.
Ego Authority — also known as Ego/Will Center Authority — belongs to specific Manifestors and Projectors whose Ego/Will Center is defined and connected to the Throat through a defined channel, with Solar Plexus and Spleen undefined. Decisions arrive through what the heart genuinely wants and what the willpower can authentically commit to. This is a voice authority — clarity emerges when the want or commitment is spoken out loud. The will is finite; the authority is built to spend it on what genuinely matters.

Self-Projected Authority
Speak it out loud. The voice reveals the truth.
Self-Projected Authority — also known as G-Center Authority — belongs exclusively to Projectors whose G-Center is defined and connected to the Throat through a defined channel, with Solar Plexus and Spleen undefined. Clarity arrives through speaking decisions out loud — not to consult, but to hear yourself. The truth surfaces in the act of articulating it, often in a sentence the Projector did not consciously plan to say. A trusted listener who does not interrupt or impose conclusions is the structural instrument.

Mental Authority
The truth is in the field. Choose the right environment.
Mental Authority — also known as Environmental Authority or Outer Authority — belongs to Projectors with no defined center routing to the Throat. Sometimes also called “No Inner Authority” because the design has no fast inner-signal mechanism. The only authority that operates outside the body rather than from within. Clarity arrives through being in the right environment, talking decisions through with a council of trusted advisors, and giving the process time. The field itself is the instrument.

Lunar Authority
Wait the moon. Talk it through. Trust the cycle.
Lunar Authority — also an outer authority — is unique to Reflectors, the rarest type, with all nine centers undefined. The moon’s roughly 29-day transit through the zodiac is the timing of decision-making. As the moon moves through different positions, the same decision feels different at different points. Truth emerges from what remains stable across the full cycle. The slowest authority in Human Design, by structural design.

Inner vs. Outer Authority
The seven authorities fall into two structural categories.
Inner Authorities (5)
Sacral, Emotional, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected — these five operate through a specific defined center in the body. The signal comes from within. Even when the mechanism involves speaking out loud (Ego, Self-Projected), the body produces the signal that the voice surfaces.
Inner authorities tend to be faster (Sacral, Splenic), or have a defined timing the body controls (Emotional’s wave, Ego’s voice). The discipline is to listen to the inner signal and trust it over mental override.
Outer Authorities (2)
Mental Authority and Lunar Authority — these two operate outside the body. The field is the instrument.
Mental Authority (also known as Environmental Authority) belongs to Projectors with no defined center routing to the Throat. Clarity arrives through being in the right environment, talking decisions through with a council of trusted advisors, and giving the process time.
Lunar Authority belongs exclusively to Reflectors. The moon’s roughly 29-day transit is the timing instrument; the trusted-listener field is the working medium. The slowest authority in the system, by structural design.
Outer authorities are slower than inner authorities. Clarity accumulates rather than arriving in a flash. The discipline is to build and maintain the right environments and the right council of listeners.

A Direct Transmission from MATTEEN
“Seven authorities exist. One of them is yours. You did not choose it. Your body chose it the moment you were born. The work is not to use a different one — that is structurally impossible. The work is to know which instrument your body actually uses, and to trust it. The mind will always offer a second opinion. The mind is not the authority. The body is. The wave is. The gut is. The whisper is. The moon is. Whatever yours is, that is the truth. Everything else is mental noise pretending to be wisdom.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Human Design Authority
What is authority in Human Design?
Authority in Human Design is the structural mechanism your body uses to make decisions correctly. It is determined by which centers are defined in your chart and how they connect to the Throat Center. Each has its own timing, its own signal, and its own discipline.
How many authorities are there in Human Design?
Seven. The seven authorities are: Sacral, Emotional (also known as Solar Plexus), Splenic, Ego (also known as Ego/Will Center), Self-Projected (also known as G-Center), Mental (also known as Environmental or Outer Authority), and Lunar (an outer authority unique to Reflectors). Five are inner authorities operating through a defined center in the body; two are outer authorities operating through environment, advisors, or the moon’s cycle.

What is the most common Human Design authority?
Emotional Authority. About 50% of the population has Emotional Authority — anyone with a defined Solar Plexus Center, regardless of energy type. Emotional Authority operates through the Solar Plexus’s natural wave; truth lives at the neutral midpoint after the wave has cycled.
Why does Emotional Authority override the others?
Because the priority order in Human Design checks for Emotional Authority first. If the Solar Plexus is defined, the emotional wave overrides every other potential signal — even if the Sacral or Spleen is also defined. The structural reason: the wave’s timing supersedes the other authorities’ instant signals because the truth lives across the wave’s cycle, not at any single point.
What’s the difference between inner and outer authority?
Inner authorities (Sacral, Emotional, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected) operate through a specific defined center in the body — the signal comes from within. Outer authorities (Mental and Lunar) operate outside the body. Mental Authority — also known as Environmental Authority — belongs to Projectors with no defined center routing to the Throat; clarity arrives through environment, trusted advisors, and time. Lunar Authority belongs to Reflectors; the moon’s roughly 29-day transit is the timing instrument, with trusted listeners as the field.
