Human Design is a mechanical decision-making system built from your birth date, your exact birth time, and your birth location. The chart it produces — called a BodyGraph — encodes which of the five energy types your design runs on, the strategy that type was built to use, the body-based authority that gives you reliable yes/no signals, the profile that describes how you meet life, and the centers, gates, and channels that map your energetic wiring. It is not a personality quiz. It is a structural reading of how your body is built to decide.

Each design is built around one of five energy types — Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector. Each type has a fixed strategy (to inform, to respond, to wait for the invitation, or to wait a lunar cycle) and one of seven authorities (Sacral, Emotional (Solar Plexus), Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental/Outer, or Lunar) that operates as the body’s decision-making instrument. Type tells you what kind of energy you carry. Strategy tells you how to engage. Authority tells you how to decide. Profile tells you how the engagement and the decisions play out across a life.

Human Design is one of several systems that describe a full design. Your Western Astrology, Chinese Zodiac, and Numerology Life Path each add their own structural inputs. Human Design specifically handles the body’s mechanical decision-making instruments — the wiring that determines which signals you can trust and which signals belong to a different design. Used well, it ends the exhausting work of borrowing other people’s decision-making strategies and returns you to the one your body was actually built to use.

Definition

Definition: Human Design is a synthesis system created by Ra Uru Hu in 1987 that combines the I Ching, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the Hindu chakra system, Western Astrology, and elements of quantum physics into a single chart called the BodyGraph. The BodyGraph encodes five core structural layers: Energy Type (one of five — Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, Reflector), Strategy (the matching engagement instruction for that type), Authority (one of seven decision-making instruments), Profile (one of twelve roles describing how the design meets life), and the underlying wiring of 9 Centers, 64 Gates, 36 Channels, and 192 Incarnation Crosses. The system is calculated from birth date, exact birth time, and birth location.

Each card below summarizes one type’s population share, signature, not-self theme, strategy, decision-making instrument, and a few famous examples. Human Design is a mechanical system for understanding how a specific body is built to make decisions. It was synthesized in 1987 from five existing structural traditions: the Chinese I Ching (the 64 hexagrams that map onto the 64 gates), the Kabbalistic Tree of Life (the underlying framework for the channels and centers), the Hindu chakra system (compressed and re-mapped into the 9 Human Design centers), Western Astrology (the planetary positions that drive the chart calculation), and elements of quantum physics and neutrino theory (the proposed transmission mechanism). The output is a single integrated chart called the BodyGraph.

Before reading further — a synthesis note. Human Design is one of several systems that describe a full design. Your Western Astrology (Sun, Moon, Rising, and the rest of the placements), Chinese Zodiac, and Numerology Life Path each add their own structural inputs. The patterns on this page describe what Human Design brings — the body’s mechanical decision-making instruments and the engagement strategy your type was built to use. How that wiring actually plays out in your career, your relationships, and your life is shaped by the synthesis of all the systems together, not by Human Design alone.

The BodyGraph is calculated from four planetary moments. Your Personality calculation uses the standard astrological moment of your birth — the Sun, Earth, Moon, North Node, South Node, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto positions at the exact second you took your first breath. Your Design calculation uses a second moment approximately 88 days (or 88 degrees of solar arc) before your birth — the moment your design body finished forming in utero. Each planet is plotted twice — once for Personality, once for Design — giving 26 total activation points on the BodyGraph. The Personality side is conscious, what you can identify with directly. The Design side is unconscious, what your body runs on without your mental awareness.

These 26 activations land on specific gates within the BodyGraph’s 9 centers. Each gate corresponds to a hexagram in the I Ching, giving the chart a 64-gate vocabulary. When two specific gates are activated on opposite ends of a channel, that channel is defined (colored in), and the two centers it connects are also defined. Gates that are activated but do not complete a channel are simply highlighted. Centers with no defined gates remain open (white). The pattern of defined and open centers determines your Energy Type. Your Type determines your Strategy. Your defined centers and their configuration determine your Authority. Your Profile is derived from the Sun gates on the Personality and Design sides (the conscious and unconscious lines, e.g., 1/3, 4/6, 5/1, 6/2).

From these calculations the BodyGraph produces a fixed structural reading: your Type, your Strategy, your Authority, your Profile, your defined and open centers, your active gates and channels, and your Incarnation Cross (the four-gate signature formed by your Personality Sun/Earth and Design Sun/Earth). This is the structural fingerprint your body operates from. The Type tells you what kind of aura you carry and how your energy moves in the world. The Strategy tells you how to engage. The Authority tells you how to decide. The Profile tells you how the engagement and the decisions play out across a life. The Centers tell you where you take in the world consistently versus where you take it in conditionally. The Gates and Channels tell you which specific themes you carry as fixed traits and which you absorb from the people around you.

Human Design is not predictive. It does not tell you what will happen. It tells you what your body is built to do — and, just as importantly, what your body is not built to do. Working with it well means understanding which Type your design is, which Strategy and Authority it runs on, and then making the slow shift away from the not-self conditioning that comes from following someone else’s strategy. The result is a decision-making practice that fits the design you were actually born with.

Human Design is built on a stack of structural layers, each adding precision to the reading. From the broadest to the most granular:

  • Energy Type. One of five — Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, Reflector — determined by which centers are defined and whether the Sacral is defined. Type describes the aura your design carries and the way energy moves through it.
  • Strategy. The fixed engagement instruction matching your Type. Manifestors inform. Generators respond. Manifesting Generators respond, then inform. Projectors wait for the invitation. Reflectors wait a lunar cycle. Following strategy aligns the design with its built-in mechanics; ignoring it produces the not-self theme.
  • Authority. One of seven decision-making instruments — Sacral, Emotional (Solar Plexus), Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental (Outer), or Lunar — determined by the pattern of defined centers. Authority is the body-based mechanism your design uses to tell truth from noise. It is the answer to “how do I decide?”
  • Signature and Not-Self. Each Type has a felt signature when living in alignment (Peace, Satisfaction, Success, Surprise) and a felt not-self theme when out of alignment (Anger, Frustration, Bitterness, Disappointment). The signature and the not-self are the daily-life feedback signals.
  • Profile. One of twelve — derived from the two lines of the Sun gates on the Personality and Design sides (e.g., 1/3, 2/4, 3/5, 4/6, 5/1, 6/2, and the rest). Profile describes the role and the pattern by which you meet life. It is the costume the Type wears.
  • The 9 Centers. The BodyGraph’s nine energy hubs — Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart (Ego), Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, Root. Each center governs specific themes. A defined center expresses those themes consistently; an open center absorbs them from the environment and is where the most conditioning enters.
  • The 64 Gates. Each center contains specific gates; together the 9 centers carry all 64 gates, one per I Ching hexagram. Each gate is a specific theme or capacity. Defined gates are fixed traits in your design; undefined gates are conditional.
  • The 36 Channels. Each channel connects two gates across two centers. When both gates of a channel are activated in your chart, the channel is defined and both centers light up. The 36 channels are the design’s fixed energy circuits.
  • The Incarnation Cross. The four-gate signature formed by your Personality Sun, Personality Earth, Design Sun, and Design Earth. There are 192 Incarnation Crosses in three families (Right Angle, Left Angle, Juxtaposition) describing the life theme your design was born into.

Together, these layers produce the full structural fingerprint. Two people with the same Type can have entirely different Authorities, Profiles, defined centers, and Incarnation Crosses — and so the same Type can express in radically different lives. The Type is the starting point; the rest of the BodyGraph is the precision.

Finding your Human Design Type requires three pieces of information: your birth date, your exact birth time, and your birth location.

  1. Birth date. The calendar date of your birth in your local time zone.
  2. Exact birth time. Hour and minute. Human Design is sensitive to time at the minute level — a birth time off by even 15 minutes can flip your Profile, shift your defined centers, or change your Type. If you do not know your exact birth time, request it from your birth certificate, hospital record, or family records. An approximate time will produce an approximate chart.
  3. Birth location. City and country. Location determines the precise astronomical positions of the planets at your birth moment.

With these three inputs, a Human Design chart calculator computes the 26 planetary activations (13 Personality, 13 Design), maps them onto the 64-gate BodyGraph, identifies your defined and open centers, derives your Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile, and outputs your Incarnation Cross.

Why precise time matters. Several Human Design layers are time-sensitive. Your Profile is derived from the line of the Sun gate on the Personality and Design sides — and lines change every ~15 minutes. Your Authority depends on which centers are defined, and a borderline activation can flip across a center boundary. Your Type can shift if the defining channel completes or fails to complete based on the exact minute. The Incarnation Cross is the most stable element (driven by Sun/Earth positions, which move slowly), but the rest of the chart benefits from precision.

Your Human Design type is calculated from your birth date, your exact birth time, and your birth location. A Human Design chart calculator processes these three inputs through the system’s standard algorithm — computing 13 Personality planetary positions at your birth moment and 13 Design positions at the moment approximately 88 days before — and outputs your BodyGraph. The pattern of defined centers on the BodyGraph determines your Type: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector. Birth time precision matters — even a 15-minute difference can shift the chart. If you do not know your exact birth time, request your birth certificate or hospital record.

Each type below carries a distinct aura, a distinct strategy, and a distinct set of decision-making authorities. Two people sharing a type can have very different lives once you factor in Authority, Profile, and Incarnation Cross — but the Type is the foundation.

Generator — The Builder (~37% of the population)

The Generator is the workforce of the planet — built to do the work that is responded to. The aura is open and enveloping — it draws in and lights up when something to respond to appears. Generators have a defined Sacral center, which is the only source of true sustainable energy in the system. The sacral responds in the moment with a body-level “uh-huh” (yes) or “uh-uh” (no) when something specific is presented. The not-self theme is frustration: when Generators try to initiate without something to respond to, the work goes flat and the frustration builds.

  • Signature: Satisfaction · Not-self: Frustration
  • Strategy: To Respond — wait for something specific to respond to, then let the sacral give the gut yes or no
  • Authority: Sacral, with Solar Plexus variant when emotionally defined (wait through the wave, then sacral responds)
  • Decision-making instrument: Sacral response — the body’s “uh-huh / uh-uh” delivered in real time to specific options
  • Famous Generators: Madonna, Oprah Winfrey, Albert Einstein, Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro
  • Read the full Generator page →

Manifesting Generator — The Multi-Track Builder (~33% of the population)

The Manifesting Generator is a Generator variant — defined Sacral plus a motor connected to the Throat. The aura is open and enveloping like the Generator’s, but the wiring lets the Manifesting Generator move faster and skip steps the standard Generator cannot skip. Manifesting Generators tend to be multi-passionate, fast-moving, and built for parallel tracks. The strategy is the same as a Generator’s — respond — with an added informing step before initiating, to clear the path of the people the action will affect.

  • Signature: Satisfaction (with peace) · Not-self: Frustration (and anger)
  • Strategy: To Respond, then Inform — respond first with the sacral, then inform before initiating
  • Authority: Sacral, with Solar Plexus variant when emotionally defined
  • Decision-making instrument: Sacral response followed by an informing step that prevents the manifestor-like friction
  • Famous Manifesting Generators: Beyoncé, Frédéric Chopin, Jimi Hendrix, Mark Twain, Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Read the full Manifesting Generator page →

Projector — The Guide (~20% of the population)

The Projector is built to see and guide others — to read the system, the team, the person — and to deliver the insight that lets the work move. The aura is focused and penetrating; it goes deep into one person at a time. Projectors do not have a defined Sacral, which means they are not built for the sustained, self-generated work that Generators and Manifesting Generators carry. They are built for short bursts of high-leverage guidance, and they require external recognition and invitation to do that guidance well. The not-self theme is bitterness: when Projectors push, force, or work without recognition, the bitterness builds.

  • Signature: Success · Not-self: Bitterness
  • Strategy: To Wait for the Invitation — wait to be recognized and invited into the big things (love, career, place to live)
  • Authority: Emotional (Solar Plexus), Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, or Mental/Outer depending on chart
  • Decision-making instrument: Whichever specific authority the chart carries — recognition opens the door, the authority decides whether to walk through it
  • Famous Projectors: Barack Obama, Mick Jagger, Brad Pitt, Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II
  • Read the full Projector page →

Manifestor — The Initiator (~9% of the population)

The Manifestor is the only type built to initiate independently. The aura is closed and repelling — it pushes outward and clears space for the action the Manifestor takes. Manifestors have a defined Throat connected to a motor center (Heart, Solar Plexus, or Root) and an undefined Sacral. This wiring makes Manifestors fast — they can act without waiting for an external trigger — and it makes their actions impactful in a way other types’ actions are not. The not-self theme is anger: when Manifestors are told to wait, ask permission, or fit into someone else’s process, they meet friction and the anger flares.

  • Signature: Peace · Not-self: Anger
  • Strategy: To Inform — initiate, then inform the people the action will affect, before they ask
  • Authority: Emotional (Solar Plexus), Splenic (intuitive), or Ego (heart/willpower) depending on chart
  • Decision-making instrument: A clear inner knowing followed by informed initiation — the body decides, the mouth informs, the action proceeds
  • Famous Manifestors: Frida Kahlo, John Lennon, Susan Sarandon, Richard Burton, Johnny Depp
  • Read the full Manifestor page →

Reflector — The Mirror (~1% of the population)

The Reflector is the rarest type — about one in a hundred — and the only type with no defined centers. The aura is resistant and sampling — it tastes the environment without taking it in. Reflectors are profound mirrors of the health of the communities and environments they live in: when the community is healthy, the Reflector flourishes; when the community is sick, the Reflector reflects the sickness. Because no center is fixed, Reflectors have no consistent inner authority. Instead, clarity arrives across a lunar cycle: ~28 days during which the Reflector cycles through all 64 gate positions and sees the decision from every angle.

  • Signature: Surprise · Not-self: Disappointment
  • Strategy: To Wait a Lunar Cycle — allow a full 28-day lunar cycle to pass before locking major decisions
  • Authority: Lunar — the cycle, not a single in-the-moment signal
  • Decision-making instrument: The 28-day lunar cycle — clarity emerges across the full transit, not in any single moment
  • Famous Reflectors: Sandra Bullock, H. G. Wells, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Michael Jackson, Rosalynn Carter

Everything in life is a function of decision-making. Every life unfolds through the decisions made within it. Each Human Design chart carries one of seven authorities — the body-based mechanism the design uses to tell truth from noise — and the authority is fixed by the pattern of defined centers in the BodyGraph. Working with Human Design well means understanding which authority your design runs on and honoring it, rather than borrowing a different authority that belongs to a different design.

The 7 authorities and which types they belong to:

  • Solar Plexus (Emotional) — Available to Manifestors, Generators, Manifesting Generators, and Projectors with a defined Solar Plexus. Clarity arrives through an emotional wave that moves from hope to hopelessness over hours, days, or weeks. The instrument is the wave, not the moment. Decide after the wave has cycled through.
  • Sacral — The default authority for Generators and Manifesting Generators with an undefined Solar Plexus. Clarity arrives as a body-level “uh-huh” (yes) or “uh-uh” (no) in real time when something specific is presented. The sacral does not initiate; it responds.
  • Splenic (Intuitive) — Available to Manifestors and Projectors with a defined Spleen and no defined Solar Plexus or Sacral acting first. Clarity arrives as a quiet, one-time, in-the-moment knowing — fast, soft, and final. If the moment passes, the signal does not repeat.
  • Ego (Heart/Willpower) — Available to Manifestors and Projectors with a defined Heart and the specific channel configurations that elevate it to authority. Clarity arrives through what serves the heart’s commitments and the willpower’s capacity. The question the ego asks is: do I want this, and do I have the will for it?
  • Self-Projected (G-Center) — Available to certain Projectors with a defined G center connected to the Throat. Clarity arrives by hearing yourself talk it through with a trusted listener. The voice produces the clarity — not the thinking.
  • Mental (Outer) Authority — Available to Projectors with no defined Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen, Heart, or G-to-Throat configuration. Clarity arrives by talking the decision through with trusted others across time. The mind is not the deciding instrument; the conversation is the deciding instrument.
  • Lunar Authority — Specific to Reflectors. Clarity emerges across a full 28-day lunar cycle as the Moon transits all 64 gates. The decision is not made in a single moment; it is made by the cycle.

Cultural advice about decision-making tends to assume a single instrument fits everyone. It does not. Telling a Sacral-authority Generator to “think it through carefully” misnames the instrument — the sacral decides in the body, in the moment, in response to a specific option. Telling an Emotional-authority Manifestor to “trust your gut and act now” misnames the instrument — the emotional wave is the instrument, and the wave needs time. Telling a Reflector to “make up your mind today” misnames the instrument — the lunar cycle is the instrument, and the cycle takes 28 days. Cultural advice flattens the seven into one. The seven authorities restore the structure.

The full breakdown of each authority — how to recognize the signal, how to wait correctly, and which cultural advice misnames it — lives on each type page and each authority page.

A Direct Transmission from MATTEEN

“Everything in your life is a function of decision-making. Every life unfolds through the decisions made within it. Human Design tells you which decision-making instrument your body was actually built to use. The Sacral’s instrument is the gut response in the moment. The Solar Plexus’s instrument is the emotional wave across time. The Spleen’s instrument is the quiet one-time knowing. The Ego’s instrument is the willpower’s verdict. The Self-Projected’s instrument is your own voice talking it through. The Mental Outer’s instrument is the conversation with trusted others. The Reflector’s instrument is the lunar cycle. None of these is wrong. Each is correct for the design that runs on it — and each is wrong when applied to a design that runs on a different one. Cultural advice flattens the seven into one. Human Design restores the structure. Find your type. Honor your strategy. Trust your authority. The life that compounds is the life that was decided correctly.”
