You take your birth date and your full birth name, reduce them to a small set of structural numbers — the Life Path, the Destiny (sometimes called Expression), the Soul Urge (sometimes called Heart’s Desire), the Personality, and the Birthday — and read each one for what it tells you about how you are built. Dow Balliett and Dr. Juno Jordan — who codified the modern Pythagorean numerology system used today: the five core calculations (Life Path, Destiny, Soul Urge, Personality, Birthday), the nine single-digit numbers, and the three master numbers (11, 22, 33).

The structural reality is straightforward: your birth date is a specific sequence of digits, and your full birth name is a specific sequence of letters. Both reduce — through a fixed set of arithmetic rules — to a small set of single-digit numbers (1 through 9) and the three master numbers (11, 22, 33) that do not reduce because their amplified expression matters more than the reduced form. The Life Path 11 is not the same as the Life Path 2, even though 1+1=2. The master number stays at 11 and reads differently — as a higher-intensity, more intuitive, more demanding version of the 2 archetype.

  • The Pythagorean letter value system. Letters are assigned numerical values in a fixed cycle: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, then the cycle repeats — J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=6, P=7, Q=8, R=9, S=1, T=2, U=3, V=4, W=5, X=6, Y=7, Z=8. The values are summed across the full birth name and reduced through the same arithmetic rules as the birth date.

Together, these layers produce the full structural fingerprint of a Numerology reading: five specific numbers — Life Path, Destiny, Soul Urge, Personality, Birthday — each drawn from the same 12-number vocabulary, each describing a different structural layer. A Life Path 7 with a Destiny 1 reads differently than a Life Path 7 with a Destiny 4 — even though both share the same underlying Life Path orientation.

The Life Path is the primary Numerology number and the one most people start with. It is calculated from your full birth date — month, day, and year — and describes the developmental pattern your life is built to unfold.

The calculation has four steps:

  1. Write out your full birth date as MM/DD/YYYY. For example, January 5, 1990 becomes 01/05/1990.
  2. Reduce the month to a single digit (or stop at 11 or 22). For January, the month is 1 — already a single digit. For October, the month is 10, which reduces to 1+0 = 1. For November, the month is 11 — stop. Do not reduce.
  3. Reduce the day to a single digit (or stop at 11 or 22). For the 5th, the day is 5. For the 22nd, the day is 22 — stop. Do not reduce.
  4. Reduce the year to a single digit (or stop at 11, 22, or 33). For 1990, sum the digits: 1+9+9+0 = 19, then 1+9 = 10, then 1+0 = 1. So 1990 reduces to 1.
  5. Sum the three reduced numbers and reduce the sum to a single digit (or stop at 11, 22, or 33).

Worked example — January 5, 1990:

  • Month: 1 (January)
  • Day: 5 (the 5th)
  • Year: 1+9+9+0 = 19 → 1+9 = 10 → 1+0 = 1
  • Sum: 1 + 5 + 1 = 7
  • Life Path: 7

Worked example — November 29, 1980 (a master number case):

  • Month: 11 (November) — stop. Master number.
  • Day: 2+9 = 11 — stop. Master number.
  • Year: 1+9+8+0 = 18 → 1+8 = 9
  • Sum: 11 + 11 + 9 = 31 → 3+1 = 4
  • Life Path: 4

(Some numerologists hold master numbers at every step; others reduce them mid-calculation and only preserve them in the final answer. Both methods are documented. The method used here preserves master numbers at every step — the most common modern convention.)

Worked example — February 13, 1975:

  • Month: 2 (February)
  • Day: 1+3 = 4
  • Year: 1+9+7+5 = 22 — stop. Master number.
  • Sum: 2 + 4 + 22 = 28 → 2+8 = 10 → 1+0 = 1
  • Life Path: 1
