Juxtaposition crosses run a fixed-fate situational theme — one specific hexagram, lived as a single concentrated expression. About 65% of the population carries a Right Angle cross; about 30% carries a Left Angle cross; about 5% carries a Juxtaposition cross.

The Human Design Incarnation Cross is one of several systems that describe the structural purpose of a life. The Incarnation Cross handles a specific layer — the four primary Sun-Earth positions in your chart and the hexagram pattern they form. Used together, the systems describe a fuller picture than any one of them alone.

The 192 crosses are divided into three angles based on the structural orientation of the life purpose. Each angle is carried by specific Profiles only — the Profile is the mechanism that connects the design to its angle.

The Incarnation Cross is the deepest structural layer of a Human Design chart. It is the cross-shaped pattern formed on the planetary wheel by the four primary Sun-Earth positions in your chart at the moment of your birth and at the ~88-degree-solar-arc point before birth. Together, those four gates describe the life purpose your design is built around — the structural map of what your life is for.

The four positions. Of the thirteen planetary activations Human Design uses in a chart, four are structurally weightiest:

• Conscious Sun (Personality Sun). Approximately 70% of your conscious identity. The Conscious Sun is the gate that carries most of who you experience yourself as being. It is the central activation of the cross.
• Conscious Earth (Personality Earth). Sits directly opposite the Conscious Sun on the zodiac wheel. The Earth grounds the Sun. If the Sun is the radiant principle, the Earth is the foundation it stands on.
• Unconscious Sun (Design Sun). The Sun’s position approximately 88 degrees of solar arc earlier — roughly three months before birth. This is the body-genetic activation. You do not consciously identify with it the way you do with the Personality Sun, but it shapes how your body operates.
• Unconscious Earth (Design Earth). Directly opposite the Unconscious Sun. The body-genetic foundation. The grounding for the body-genetic activation.

These four positions are primary because the Sun-Earth axis carries roughly 70% of the activation weight of the entire chart. The Personality side accounts for the conscious identity; the Design side accounts for the body-genetic identity. The other planetary positions (Moon, Nodes, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) add structural depth, but the cross itself is defined by the four Sun-Earth gates.

The 64 hexagrams. Each gate is one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. The 64 hexagrams form the structural alphabet of Human Design. Each gate carries a distinct theme — Gate 1 is Self-Expression, Gate 36 is Crisis, Gate 11 is Ideas, Gate 12 is Caution, and so on. When the four Sun-Earth gates combine, they form a unique cross — one of the 192 possible patterns.

Why four out of thirteen. Human Design uses thirteen planetary activations: the Sun, Earth, Moon, North Node, South Node, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, each calculated on both the Personality side and the Design side. Of these, the Sun-Earth axis on both sides — the four primary positions — carries the structural purpose. The other nine planetary activations on each side shape the rest of the chart: the Moon governs driving emotional rhythm, the Nodes describe the karmic environment, the personal planets carry communication, values, and action, and the outer planets carry the generational signature. The cross is built specifically from the Sun-Earth axis because that axis carries the heaviest structural weight.

The Incarnation Cross is calculated from three pieces of birth data: your exact birth date, your exact birth time, and your birth location. From these, the planetary positions are calculated for two moments — the moment of birth (Personality) and approximately 88 degrees of solar arc earlier, which is roughly 88 days before birth (Design). Each planetary position is then mapped onto the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching by zodiac degree. The result is a chart with thirteen Personality activations and thirteen Design activations — twenty-six gate positions in total. The cross is the pattern formed by four of them.

The Personality / Design distinction. Human Design splits the chart into two sides. The Personality side (Conscious) is calculated from the moment of birth. These are the gates you consciously identify with — the activations you experience as “you.” The Design side (Unconscious) is calculated from the ~88-degree-solar-arc point before birth. These are the body-genetic activations. You do not consciously identify with them the same way; they operate underneath awareness, shaping how your body and instincts respond. The cross uses both: the conscious Sun-Earth axis carries the identity layer, the unconscious Sun-Earth axis carries the body-genetic layer.

The cross-shaped pattern. When you plot the four positions on the planetary wheel, they form an X. The Conscious Sun and Conscious Earth sit directly opposite each other (180° apart). The Unconscious Sun and Unconscious Earth also sit directly opposite each other (180° apart). The two axes typically cross at an angle — right angle (Right Angle Cross), left angle (Left Angle Cross), or in fixed-fate situational alignment (Juxtaposition). The angle is what gives the cross its name.

The Four Quarters. Each cross belongs to one of four Quarters of purpose, determined by the zodiac position of the Conscious Sun:

• Quarter of Initiation (Aquarius, Pisces, Aries). Purpose: Initiate / Begin. The Quarter of starting. Crosses here are oriented toward the beginning of a cycle, the first move, the originating impulse.
• Quarter of Civilization (Taurus, Gemini, Cancer). Purpose: Form / Establish. The Quarter of building. Crosses here are oriented toward forming structures, establishing patterns, building the container.
• Quarter of Duality (Leo, Virgo, Libra). Purpose: Bond / Relate. The Quarter of relating. Crosses here are oriented toward bonding, partnership, the relational field.
• Quarter of Mutation (Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn). Purpose: Transform / Mutate. The Quarter of changing. Crosses here are oriented toward transformation, mutation, the change of a cycle.

The Quarter sits above the angle. Two crosses can share the same angle (both Right Angle) and belong to different Quarters, which gives them very different purpose-orientations. Reading your cross at full depth means reading the angle, the Quarter, and the specific four gates together.

The Profile-to-angle rule. Not every Profile can carry every angle. The Profile lines map mechanically to angles:

• Right Angle profiles (7): 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6 — these profiles can only carry Right Angle crosses.
• Left Angle profiles (4): 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3 — these profiles can only carry Left Angle crosses.
• Juxtaposition profile (1): 4/1 — the only profile that carries a Juxtaposition cross.

This means once you know your Profile, you know which angle your cross belongs to. The 12 possible Profile combinations distribute neatly across the three angles, and the angle assignment is fixed.

Finding your Incarnation Cross requires three pieces of birth data:

1. Your exact birth date.
2. Your exact birth time. This matters more than for most layers of the chart. The cross depends on the Sun’s position, which moves about 1 degree per day, but the gates are calculated to high precision. A birth time off by even a few hours can change the Sun’s gate — and therefore the entire cross.
3. Your birth location. Used to calculate the local solar time and the precise planetary positions for your birth moment.

With those three pieces of information, you generate a BodyGraph. At the top of your chart, the cross will be listed by name — for example “Right Angle Cross of Eden 1” or “Juxtaposition Cross of Insight” or “Left Angle Cross of Healing 2.” The chart will also display the four gate numbers (in 36/6 | 11/12 shorthand, for example), the angle (RAX, LAX, or JAX), and the Quarter.

Why precise time matters. The Sun moves about 1 degree per day. Each gate covers about 5.625 degrees of arc. A birth time off by six hours can shift the Sun a quarter of a degree — usually safe, but on a gate boundary, it can change the gate entirely. If you do not know your exact birth time, the cross may need to be reconstructed from the rest of the chart and your lived experience. If your birth time is approximate, treat the cross as a hypothesis until confirmed.
