Your BodyGraph is built around nine energy hubs called Centers. Each one governs a specific theme — thinking, communication, emotion, identity, willpower, vitality, intuition, pressure. Some of your Centers are colored on the chart. Some are white. That single visual difference is the foundational mechanic of how the BodyGraph works.

A defined Center — the colored ones — expresses its theme consistently. It is the same wherever you go, with whoever you are with, on whatever day of the week. An undefined Center — the white ones, sometimes called open — does not have its own fixed expression. It absorbs and amplifies the theme of that Center from whoever you are around, from the environment, from the transit of the day. Where you are defined, you are reliable. Where you are undefined, you are variable, sensitive, and a built-in receiver for the world.

This is one structural layer of your design, sitting alongside your energy type, your authority, your profile, your defined gates and channels, and your incarnation cross. It is also one lens of several — the Western Astrology chart describes your personality through planets and signs, the Chinese Zodiac reads your year-energy through the animals and elements, and Numerology reads the vibration of your birth date and name. Human Design is the structural body-mechanic layer. The Centers are where that mechanic begins.

Nine Centers, listed in anatomical order from the crown of the head to the base of the spine. Each card below names the Center, its shape and color on the BodyGraph, its themes, what the defined version expresses, what the undefined version absorbs, and a link to the full leaf page.

The nine Centers are the energy hubs of the BodyGraph. They are the structural foundation of the whole system — every other layer of Human Design sits on top of them. Your energy type comes from which Centers are defined and how they connect. Your authority comes from the same pattern. Your defined channels and gates run between specific Centers. The Centers are where the design actually lives.

Each Center governs a specific theme of human experience. The Head holds inspiration pressure. The Ajna holds mental processing. The Throat holds expression. The G holds identity and direction. The Heart holds willpower and the material world. The Solar Plexus holds emotion. The Sacral holds life-force. The Splenic holds intuition. The Root holds pressure to act. These are not symbolic associations. They are the structural categories the BodyGraph uses to map how energy moves through a body.

The foundational mechanic is the defined-versus-undefined distinction. A Center is defined when at least one of the channels attached to it is fully activated by gates from your birth chart calculation. The Center then “colors in” on the BodyGraph and expresses its theme consistently across your life. A Center is undefined — also called open — when none of its channels are fully activated. The Center stays white on the BodyGraph and operates as a receiver: it absorbs and amplifies the theme of that Center from whoever you are around, from your environment, and from the transits of the day. Where you are defined, you are fixed. Where you are undefined, you are conditioned.

Centers are structural, not hierarchical. No Center is better than another. A defined Solar Plexus is not better than an undefined Solar Plexus — they are different designs, with different gifts and different work. A defined Heart is rarer than an undefined Heart, but rarity is not value. Each pattern of defined and undefined Centers makes a different kind of design, and each kind of design has its own way of moving through life correctly.

Human Design is one of several lenses for understanding yourself. The Centers describe the structural body-mechanic layer. The Western Astrology chart describes personality through planets and signs. The Chinese Zodiac reads the year-energy through animals and elements. Numerology reads vibration through your birth date and name. Each one is real. Each one reveals a different angle. The Centers are how Human Design starts.

Centers color in — become defined — through the channels that connect them. A channel is a fully-activated pathway between two Centers, built from a pair of gates. The gates come from the planetary positions in your birth chart, calculated from your conception data and your birth data — together, the four planetary positions that form the BodyGraph. When both gates of a channel are activated, the channel runs, the Centers at both ends color in, and you carry that fixed energy for life.

The nine Centers fall into functional categories that explain how they actually operate in the body. Wherever Centers appear below, they’re listed in anatomical order — top of the BodyGraph to bottom.

The 4 Pressure Centers — Head, Ajna, Solar Plexus, Root. Pressure Centers create the urge to act. The Head and Ajna press from above as mental pressure — the pressure to inspire, to question, to conceptualize, to be certain. The Solar Plexus and the Root press from below as somatic pressure — the pressure of feeling and the pressure of adrenaline. Pressure is fuel. It is meant to create movement, not to be permanent. A pressure Center that runs all the time is a pressure Center being misused.

The 3 Awareness Centers — Ajna, Splenic, Solar Plexus. Awareness Centers are how the body actually knows things. The Ajna is mental awareness — thinking and conceptualization. The Splenic is bodily awareness — instinct, taste, smell, the immune system, the in-the-moment whisper. The Solar Plexus is emotional awareness — feelings, moods, the wave that carries truth at its midpoint. Each awareness Center has its own timing. The mind is fast. The Splenic is instant and one-time. The emotional wave takes its own cycle. A correct decision uses the awareness Center your design actually has, not the one you wish it had.

The 4 Motors — Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral, Root. Motors generate the energy that runs the design. They are the engines. The Heart is the will engine — short, focused bursts of commitment energy. The Solar Plexus is the emotional engine, generating the wave that carries truth. The Sacral is the sustained-energy engine — the only Center in Human Design built for steady, long-form life-force, the engine of work, creativity, and sexuality. The Root is the adrenal engine — pulse-on, pulse-off pressure for getting started. Whether one of your motors is connected to the Throat through a defined channel is the structural question that determines whether you are a Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector.

The Throat is the manifestation Center — the only Center that converts the design’s inner activation into outer expression and action. Speech, doing, and the move from impulse to manifestation all happen at the Throat. Every defined Center wants a route to the Throat. Where one exists, the design can express itself directly. Where it doesn’t, expression travels through other paths.

The G Center is the identity Center — the seat of self, direction, love, and the magnetic monopole that draws the right people, places, and trajectories toward you. It is a directional awareness when defined and a fluid receiver when undefined.

These categories overlap. The Solar Plexus is a Motor and an Awareness and a Pressure. The Ajna is an Awareness and a Pressure. The Root is a Motor and a Pressure. The categories describe roles, not exclusive identities. Centers do many things at once.

The defined-versus-undefined distinction is the mechanic that makes the whole system work. A defined Center is colored on your BodyGraph. An undefined Center is white. That visual difference describes a real, lifelong difference in how that Center operates inside your body.

A defined Center is consistent. It expresses its theme the same way wherever you go, whoever you are with, whatever the day is. If your Sacral is defined, you have a steady life-force engine — every day, regardless of the room. If your Solar Plexus is defined, the emotional wave runs whether or not anyone else is having one. Defined Centers are who you are. They are the fixed traits of your design, the place the chart says: this is reliably you.

An undefined Center is variable and amplifying. It does not have its own fixed expression. Instead, it acts as a receiver — taking in the theme of that Center from whoever is around you, from your environment, and from the transit of the day. An undefined Solar Plexus picks up the emotion of the room and amplifies it. An undefined Sacral picks up the work-energy of the room and amplifies it. An undefined Head picks up the questions of the room and amplifies them. Undefined Centers are where you are conditioned — where the world has been writing on you since the day you were born.

The conditioning is not a bug. It is the point. Undefined Centers are designed to learn, to sample, to read the energies of the world through your own body. Over a life, the undefined Center accumulates wisdom — about emotion, about work, about questions, about identity, about pressure, about every theme. The Center becomes a wise reader of that theme in others, even though it never has a fixed version of it inside you. The work with undefined Centers is not to fix them. They cannot be fixed — they were not broken. The work is to stop pretending they are defined and to stop letting their amplification run the show.

The defined Centers are who you are. The undefined Centers are where the world is. Both are part of the design. Neither is a problem.

Reading your Centers is the most direct entry into your Human Design chart. It takes about thirty seconds and tells you more than almost any other layer.

Step 1: Open your BodyGraph. Your chart shows nine geometric shapes — three triangles up top, a square at the throat, a diamond in the middle, two triangles on the right side, a square and a triangle below them, and a final square at the base.

Step 2: Look at the colors. Some of the shapes will be colored in — red, yellow, brown, green. These are your defined Centers. Some will be white. These are your undefined (or open) Centers.

Step 3: Count. How many are defined? How many are undefined? Some designs are heavily defined — six, seven, eight, even nine Centers colored. Some are barely defined — one or two Centers colored. Reflectors have zero defined Centers. Every pattern is structurally valid.

Step 4: Read the pattern. Each colored Center is a place where you carry fixed energy. Each white Center is a place where you take in and amplify the energy of your environment. The pattern is your design. The defined Centers tell you what you reliably bring. The undefined Centers tell you where you are most porous — and where, over time, you become wise.

Step 5: Cross-reference with type and authority. Your defined Centers also determine your energy type and your authority. The Sacral defines whether you are in the Generator family. A motor-to-Throat defined channel determines whether you can initiate. The Solar Plexus defines whether you have an Emotional Authority. Centers are the mechanic underneath everything else.

Head Center — Expanded

The Head sits at the crown as a yellow triangle — the upper pressure Center, where inspiration arrives and questions form. The Head feeds the Ajna; pressure from above creates the mental activity the Ajna processes.

Defined Head carries a fixed source of inspiration and questions. The pressure to find answers is steady and internal, and your questions tend to recur in recognizable patterns across your life. Undefined Head is a receiver for the inspirations and questions of others — you can take on mental pressure that isn’t yours and exhaust yourself trying to answer questions you didn’t need to ask. The gift is wisdom about which questions are worth answering.

The Ajna sits below the Head as a green triangle — both an Awareness Center (mental awareness) and a Pressure Center (the pressure to be certain). It is where concepts form and conclusions arrive.

Defined Ajna carries a fixed way of thinking — mental processing runs through consistent patterns and conclusions are stable across time. Undefined Ajna thinks fluidly, holds multiple frameworks at once, and shifts conclusions easily. The conditioning pattern is to perform a fixed opinion to relieve the pressure of openness; the gift is real flexibility and a wisdom about which conclusions are actually solid.

Throat Center — Expanded

The Throat sits below the Ajna as a brown square — the only Center that turns inner activation into outer expression and action. Speech, doing, and manifestation all happen here. Every defined Center wants a route to the Throat.

Defined Throat carries reliable access to expression. Words land. If a Motor is connected to your Throat through a defined channel, you can initiate — that single structural fact is the difference between a Manifestor and a Projector. Undefined Throat experiences variable expression; the conditioning pattern is to force speech or push for attention. The gift is knowing when to speak and when to wait for the invitation.

The G sits in the middle of the BodyGraph as a yellow diamond — the seat of identity, direction, love, and the magnetic monopole that pulls the right people, places, and trajectories toward you.

Defined G carries a fixed identity and an internally generated direction. The magnetic monopole runs steadily. Undefined G has a fluid identity — who you are shifts with environment and people. The conditioning pattern is to search relentlessly for a fixed self or direction; the gift is freedom from needing a single identity, and a deep wisdom about people, place, and love.

Heart Center — Expanded

The Heart sits on the right side as a small red triangle — also called the Ego or Will Center. The smallest Center on the chart, defined in roughly 30% of the population. The Heart holds willpower, ego, commitment, promises, the material world, money, and self-worth.

Defined Heart carries a reliable will that runs in pulses — short bursts of commitment energy strong enough to keep the word. When the Heart is connected to the Throat and higher-priority Centers are undefined, it becomes Ego Authority. Undefined Heart has no fixed willpower. The conditioning pattern is to over-promise and over-prove worth; the gift is freedom from the proving-game and a clear read on other people’s commitments.

Solar Plexus Center — Expanded

The Solar Plexus sits on the right side below the Heart as a brown triangle — an Awareness Center, a Motor Center, and a Pressure Center, all at once. It holds emotion, the emotional wave, feelings, moods, and what Human Design calls spirit.

Defined Solar Plexus runs an emotional wave on its own cycle from high to low to neutral. Truth lives at the neutral midpoint after the wave has passed through — there is no truth in the now. About half the population is defined here, and when defined, the Solar Plexus is also Emotional Authority, which sits first in the canonical authority priority order. Undefined Solar Plexus has no wave of its own — you absorb and amplify the emotion of whoever is around you. The conditioning pattern is to avoid confrontation to keep the room calm; the gift is profound empathy once you can tell whose wave is whose.

Sacral Center — Expanded

The Sacral sits in the lower-middle of the BodyGraph as a red square — the only Motor built for sustained, long-form energy. It holds life-force, work, sexuality, vitality, and the gut yes/no response.

Defined Sacral carries a sustained engine for work, creativity, and sexuality. The gut responds in real time as a low “uh-huh” yes or “uh-uh” no. About 70% of the population is defined here — every Generator and Manifesting Generator. When defined and the Solar Plexus is undefined, the Sacral is also Sacral Authority. Undefined Sacral has no sustained engine — you amplify the work-energy of the room. The conditioning pattern is to push past the body’s limits and burn out; the gift is wisdom about how much is enough.

Defined Splenic carries reliable in-the-moment intuition — a quiet, one-time, pre-verbal whisper that does not repeat. When defined and the Solar Plexus and Sacral are undefined, the Splenic is Splenic Authority. Undefined Splenic has variable intuition and amplifies the body-knowing of those around it. The conditioning pattern is to hold on to people, jobs, and habits that are no longer good for you; the gift is the wisdom to know what to let go of.

Root Center — Expanded

The Root sits at the base of the BodyGraph as a brown square — a Motor and a Pressure Center, the adrenal source of pressure to act and the pulse-on, pulse-off engine that drives starts and momentum.

Defined Root carries consistent pulsing pressure. Adrenaline is regulated and internal, and you know your own rhythm. The Root never runs continuously — it pulses, by design. Undefined Root has variable pressure and amplifies the urgency of the room. The conditioning pattern is to rush through everything to relieve pressure that isn’t yours; the gift is the wisdom to know when pressure is real and when it’s borrowed.

Everything in life is a function of decision-making. Every life unfolds through the decisions made within it.

The Centers are where decision-making actually happens. Your authority — the structural mechanism your body uses to make decisions correctly — lives in or relates to one of your defined Centers. The connection is direct: a specific defined Center makes a specific authority available. The body of your design decides through the Center it carries.

Wherever Authorities are listed below, they appear in the locked canonical order — Sacral, Emotional (Solar Plexus), Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental, Lunar.

• Sacral Authority lives in the Sacral Center. Available when the Sacral is defined and the Solar Plexus is undefined. The body decides through the gut yes/no, in real time, as a response to specific stimulus.
• Emotional Authority lives in the Solar Plexus Center. Available when the Solar Plexus is defined — overrides every other inner authority signal in the priority order. The body decides across the full emotional wave, with truth landing at the neutral midpoint after the wave has cycled.
• Splenic Authority lives in the Splenic Center. Available when the Splenic is defined and the Solar Plexus and Sacral are undefined. The body decides through the one-time, pre-verbal whisper of the Splenic.
• Ego Authority lives in the Heart Center. Available when the Heart is defined and connected to the Throat through a defined channel, and the higher-priority Centers are undefined. The body decides through what the will actually wants and will commit to.
• Self-Projected Authority lives in the G Center. Available to Projectors with a defined G Center connected to the Throat, with the higher-priority Centers undefined. The body decides through what the voice reveals when it speaks — clarity arrives through talking it out with a trusted listener.
• Mental Authority (Outer Authority) lives in the field around the body, not in a single defined Center — it is for Projectors with no defined Center routing to the Throat. Decisions clarify through environment, time, and trusted advisors.
• Lunar Authority is the outer authority for Reflectors — all nine Centers undefined. The body decides across the moon’s roughly 29-day cycle, with trusted listeners as the field.

The pattern is clean: where your design has a defined Center with the right structural connections, your body has an authority that uses that Center as its instrument. The Centers are the hardware. The authority is the operating procedure for using it correctly.
