- The Nine Centers in Human Design: Navigate to the other eight Centers in the BodyGraph
The Solar Plexus Center is the emotional center of your BodyGraph. It is where feeling lives in the design. It is also one of the most unusual Centers in Human Design, because it does two jobs at once. It is an awareness center, which means it is a place where consciousness operates in you. And it is a motor center, which means it generates energy that moves you through life. No other Center in the BodyGraph carries both roles.
In Human Design, every chart has nine Centers. Each Center is either Defined (colored in) or Undefined (white). Defined means the energy of that Center is consistent in you. It is who you are. Undefined means the energy is not fixed in you. You take it on from the environment, from other people, from the rooms you sit in.
The Solar Plexus is also called the Emotional Center, and the two names point to the same thing. When your Solar Plexus is Defined, you run on an emotional wave. Feelings move through you on a built-in cycle of high, low, and neutral, and the wave needs to complete before clarity arrives. When your Solar Plexus is Undefined, you do not have your own wave. You amplify the waves of the people around you, and the emotions you feel are often not yours at all.
Both designs are correct. Both are valuable. They are not better or worse versions of each other. They are different. And living each one cleanly requires understanding which one you have.

Definition: The Solar Plexus Center in Human Design, also called the Emotional Center, is one of nine energy centers in the BodyGraph. It carries emotional awareness and houses the emotional wave. It is unique in being both an awareness center and a motor center. The Solar Plexus contains 7 Gates: Gate 6 (Friction), Gate 37 (Friendship), Gate 22 (Grace), Gate 36 (Crisis), Gate 30 (Desires), Gate 55 (Spirit), and Gate 49 (Principles). A Defined Solar Plexus runs on an emotional wave that must be honored through its full cycle of high, low, and neutral before decisions can be made; for many people with a Defined Solar Plexus, this is their Emotional Authority. An Undefined Solar Plexus amplifies the emotions of others and becomes wise about emotion by reading the field rather than running on its own wave. About 50 percent of people have a Defined Solar Plexus. About 50 percent have an Undefined Solar Plexus. Generate your free Human Design chart on HumanCharts to find out yours.
The Solar Plexus Center is one of the nine Centers in the Human Design BodyGraph. The Centers are energy hubs, each one carrying a specific function in the design. The Solar Plexus sits on the lower right of the chart, below the Throat and to the right of the Sacral. In Human Design literature it is often called the Emotional Center, and the two names are interchangeable.
The Solar Plexus Center carries three core themes:
- Emotional awareness. Feeling as a form of consciousness. The Solar Plexus is one of three awareness centers in the design, along with the Splenic Center and the Ajna Center.
- The emotional wave. A built-in cycle of high, low, and neutral that runs through anyone with a Defined Solar Plexus and shapes how clarity arrives over time.
- Motor energy. The Solar Plexus is one of four motor centers in the design, along with the Sacral, Heart, and Root. It generates the energy that drives feeling into the world. It is the only Center that is both an awareness center and a motor center.
This dual nature is what makes the Solar Plexus so important. Awareness centers tell you something. Motor centers move you. The Solar Plexus does both at once, which is why emotion in Human Design is not treated as a problem to manage. It is a mechanism to honor. For people with a Defined Solar Plexus, the wave is not noise. It is the design speaking.
The Solar Plexus has 7 Gates. These 7 Gates are the specific channels through which emotional awareness and emotional motor energy express in your chart. Whether the Solar Plexus is Defined depends on whether any of these Gates are activated and connected to other Centers through a Channel.
A note on language. Human Design calls each of these 7 positions a Gate, but you can also think of each Gate as a Gift. The 64 Gates in your chart are 64 archetypal gifts your design carries, drawn from the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. The Gene Keys system, developed by Richard Rudd, uses the same 64 patterns and calls them Gene Keys. Gate, Gift, and Gene Key all point to the same thing. We use the term Gate throughout because that is the primary Human Design term, but the reframe matters: a Gate is a Gift you are here to live.
This is the most important distinction on this page. Whether your Solar Plexus Center is Defined or Undefined fundamentally changes how emotion operates in you, and the advice that helps one state often hurts the other.
Practice: Wait for clarity
Defined Solar Plexus Center (About 50 Percent of People)
A Defined Solar Plexus Center is colored in on the BodyGraph. The energy of the Center is consistent in you. You run on an emotional wave that is built into your design. Emotion in you is not a passing weather event. It is a structural feature of how you arrive at clarity.
People with a Defined Solar Plexus Center:
- Run on a built-in emotional wave that moves through highs, lows, and neutral
- Need to ride the wave fully before making important decisions
- Have Emotional Authority as their inner authority (for most of them)
- Do not have access to in-the-moment clarity, and they are not supposed to
- Should not be told to “calm down” or “make a decision now.” The wave is the design.
Undefined Solar Plexus Center (About 50 Percent of People)
An Undefined Solar Plexus Center is white on the BodyGraph. The energy of the Center is not fixed in you. You do not have your own emotional wave. Instead, you amplify the emotional waves of the people around you, often without realizing it.
People with an Undefined Solar Plexus Center:
- Feel emotions that are not theirs but feel as if they are
- Amplify whatever emotional charge is in the room
- Become wise about emotion by observing the field rather than running on a wave
- Often become conflict-avoidant, because feeling other people’s emotion hurts
- Should not be told to “process your emotions.” Many of the emotions are not yours to process.
The single most important truth for an Undefined Solar Plexus: the emotion you are feeling may not be yours. Learning to ask “whose feeling is this?” is the start of the wisdom this design carries.
When you know your Solar Plexus Center is Defined, you unlock the following pieces of yourself:
- A built-in emotional wave. Your feelings move on a cycle. The wave is not a malfunction. It is a built-in design feature that brings clarity through time, not in the moment.
- Emotional clarity over time, not on demand. You are not designed to know how you feel about something the moment it appears. You are designed to feel through it, ride the high and the low and the neutral, and arrive at clarity once the wave has completed.
- The motor of feeling. Your Solar Plexus is a motor center. The emotional wave is not just awareness. It is energy that moves you through life, drives your relationships, and powers what you create.
- A reliable inner authority for decisions. For most people with a Defined Solar Plexus, this is your Emotional Authority. Decisions are made by waiting through the wave, not by jumping at the first feeling.
- Emotional depth others can rest in. When you live the wave correctly, your emotional presence is a stabilizing force for the people around you. The feelings are not chaos. They are the mechanism working.
- A design that does not need to be “managed” into neutrality. You are built to feel. The cultural advice to suppress, regulate, or override emotion is built for a different design.
You do not have to calculate any of this. Generate your free Human Design chart on HumanCharts and we will tell you whether your Solar Plexus is Defined and what that unlocks.
When you know your Solar Plexus Center is Undefined, you unlock the following pieces of yourself:
- Sensitivity to the emotional field. You feel what is in the room. You amplify whatever emotional charge is present. This is not weakness. It is a high-resolution emotional receiver.
- Wisdom about emotion by observation. Because you have felt so many people’s emotions over a lifetime, you can become wise about how emotion works in a way that a Defined Solar Plexus cannot. You read the field instead of running on a wave.
- Freedom from a personal wave. You are not designed to run on a built-in emotional cycle. When you are alone and out of the emotional fields of others, you can return to a baseline that is genuinely yours.
- The capacity to recognize whose feeling is whose. The core practice is asking “is this mine?” Learning to tell your own emotion from someone else’s amplified emotion is the work, and it is freeing.
- A natural read on the emotional climate of a room. You can walk into a space and know what is going on emotionally before a word is spoken. The information is real and usable, if you know it is coming from outside you.
- A design that does not need the wave to make decisions. You are not built to wait for a wave to clear before knowing what is correct. Your decision-making mechanism lives elsewhere in your chart, not in the Solar Plexus.

The Solar Plexus Center has different strengths depending on whether it is Defined or Undefined. Both sets are real. Both are valuable. They are not better or worse than each other.
Strengths of a Defined Solar Plexus Center
- A reliable emotional wave that brings clarity through time
- Emotional depth and presence others can feel and rest in
- A built-in motor that drives feeling into action and creation
- Emotional Authority as a decision-making mechanism for most who carry this definition
- The capacity to honor emotion as information rather than treat it as interference
Strengths of an Undefined Solar Plexus Center
- High sensitivity to the emotional climate of any room
- Wisdom about emotion gained through reading and amplifying many waves over time
- The capacity to be a clear emotional mirror for others without being attached to their wave
- Freedom from a personal wave when out of the field of Defined people
- The ability to recognize whose feeling is whose, which is rare and valuable
The Solar Plexus Center also has different challenges depending on whether it is Defined or Undefined. These are not character flaws. They are predictable distortions that show up when one state tries to act like the other, or when the culture pushes the wrong advice onto the design.
Challenges a Defined Solar Plexus Center Runs Into
- Making decisions at the top or the bottom of the wave instead of waiting through it
- Mistaking the wave for a problem to fix instead of a mechanism to honor
- Suppressing emotion to fit a culture that wants neutrality
- Letting the low of the wave convince you the low is the truth
- Letting the high of the wave convince you the high is the truth
Challenges an Undefined Solar Plexus Center Runs Into
- Mistaking other people’s emotions for your own and trying to process them as yours
- Conflict avoidance because feeling other people’s anger or hurt is genuinely painful
- Suppressing what you actually feel in order to keep the room calm
- Saying yes when you mean no because the emotional pressure of the room overrides your clarity
- Believing the amplified emotion is who you are when in fact you are picking it up from outside
The repair pattern is the reverse of the distortion. A Defined Solar Plexus stays in alignment by riding the wave to completion and refusing to decide at the extremes. An Undefined Solar Plexus stays in alignment by recognizing whose feeling is whose, leaving rooms when the field is too loud, and not making decisions while inside someone else’s wave.
The Solar Plexus Center has seven Gates. Each of these Gates carries a specific theme of emotion, feeling, or the wave. If you have one or more of these Gates activated in your chart, that Gate is operating in you as a Gift you carry.
- Gate 6, The Gate of Friction. Also called the Gate of Conflict. The emotional friction between people that determines who comes into your life and who does not. Read the full breakdown of Gate 6, The Gate of Friction.
- Gate 37, The Gate of Friendship. Also called the Gate of the Family. The emotional bond that holds community and family together through agreement and touch. Read the full breakdown of Gate 37, The Gate of Friendship.
- Gate 22, The Gate of Grace. Also called the Gate of Openness. Emotional openness and the grace to handle social situations with feeling at the surface. Read the full breakdown of Gate 22, The Gate of Grace.
- Gate 36, The Gate of Crisis. Also called the Darkening of the Light. The emotional intensity of new experiences and the depth that comes from going through emotional crisis. Read the full breakdown of Gate 36, The Gate of Crisis.
- Gate 30, The Gate of Desires. Also called the Clinging Fire. The fire of feeling. Desires, longing, and the emotional fuel of what you want. Read the full breakdown of Gate 30, The Gate of Desires.
- Gate 55, The Gate of Spirit. Also called the Gate of Abundance. The frequency of emotional spirit, mood, and the abundance or scarcity of feeling itself. Read the full breakdown of Gate 55, The Gate of Spirit.
- Gate 49, The Gate of Principles. Also called the Gate of Revolution. The emotional principles that govern relationships, agreements, and when it is time to break with them. Read the full breakdown of Gate 49, The Gate of Principles.
Each of these Gates, whether activated in your chart or not, sits in the Solar Plexus Center and contributes to the larger theme of emotional awareness, the wave, and the motor of feeling.
Everything in life is a function of decision-making. Every life unfolds through the decisions made within it.
The Solar Plexus Center is more directly connected to decision-making than any other Center in the BodyGraph, because for most people with a Defined Solar Plexus, the Solar Plexus is their inner authority. This is called Emotional Authority, and it is the most common authority in Human Design.
For people with a Defined Solar Plexus and Emotional Authority, the principle is: there is no truth in the now. You are not designed to know how you feel about something in the moment. The wave needs to complete. You ride the high, you ride the low, you ride the neutral, and clarity arrives once the wave has run its course. The mind says “decide now.” The design says “wait for the wave.” When you wait, the decision that emerges is reliable. When you do not, you end up living out a feeling that has already changed.
For people with a Defined Solar Plexus, the practical work is patience. Big decisions do not get made at the top of a high. They do not get made at the bottom of a low. They get made when you have sat with the situation through the full cycle of feeling and the wave has settled into something steady.
For people with an Undefined Solar Plexus, the principle is different but equally important. Do not make decisions while inside someone else’s wave. If you are in a room with someone whose emotions are charging the field, the feelings you are having about the decision are not entirely yours. Step out of the field. Get to a place where you are not amplifying anyone. Then check what is left, and let your own decision-making mechanism take over.
In both cases, the Solar Plexus is not necessarily the universal decision-maker. Your Strategy and your Authority are. For about half of all people with a Defined Solar Plexus, the Solar Plexus is the Authority. For others, including those with an Undefined Solar Plexus, the Authority lives elsewhere in the chart.
To work with your Solar Plexus Center correctly:
- Know whether your Solar Plexus is Defined or Undefined. Generate your free chart and find out.
- Defined Solar Plexus: wait through the wave, do not decide at the extremes.
- Undefined Solar Plexus: recognize whose feeling is whose, do not decide inside someone else’s wave.
- Both: let your Strategy and Authority make the actual decisions.

This is the advice the modern world hands out by default. Don’t be so emotional. Calm down. Stop overreacting. Get a grip. Be rational.
The advice is wrong for half the population. And it is wrong in a different way for the other half.
If you have a Defined Solar Plexus, “don’t be so emotional” is mechanically incompatible with your design. You run on a wave. The wave is not a malfunction. It is the operating system. Telling you not to be emotional is telling you not to run the system that is producing your clarity. The result of suppressing the wave is not calm. It is a decision-maker that has lost access to its decision-making mechanism. You do not need to be less emotional. You need to ride the wave to completion and decide once it has settled. That is the design.
If you have an Undefined Solar Plexus, the advice misframes what is happening for you. The emotion in the room is real. You are amplifying it because the design is built to amplify it. Telling you “don’t be so emotional” treats the amplification as a personal failing, when in fact you are reading the field accurately. The correct move is not to suppress what you are feeling. It is to ask whose feeling it is, and to step out of the field if the field is not yours to be in.
What is actually correct for a Defined Solar Plexus is to honor the wave. Make space for the high. Make space for the low. Decide later. What is actually correct for an Undefined Solar Plexus is to recognize that the emotion you are feeling may not be yours, and to give yourself permission to leave rooms that are not yours to absorb.
The cultural advice was built for a population that assumed emotion was either universal noise or a sign of weakness. Human Design says neither. Emotion is information. For half of you, it is your built-in clarity mechanism. For the other half, it is a reading on the world around you. Knowing which half you are in changes everything.
The Solar Plexus Center has its closest parallel in Western Astrology in the Moon. The Moon is the planet of emotion, mood, inner emotional life, and the rhythm of feeling over time. Reading someone’s Moon sign and Moon house is the Western Astrology way of describing how they feel.
But the mapping is not clean. Western Astrology treats emotion as universal. Everyone has a Moon, everyone has emotions, and the Moon describes how those emotions show up. Human Design splits emotion into Defined or Undefined and treats the two as fundamentally different operating systems. There is no Western Astrology equivalent to the Undefined Solar Plexus, because Western Astrology does not have a category for “emotion that is amplified from the environment and is not yours to run on a wave.”
This is one of the places where Human Design says something Western Astrology does not. If your Solar Plexus is Undefined, the cultural assumption that everyone has their own continuous emotional life does not fully apply to you. The feelings you have inside other people’s emotional fields are real, but they may not be yours. The mechanics of your emotional experience are different from the mechanics described in any sun-and-moon-based system.
People who study both systems often find that the Moon in Western Astrology gives them the cultural script for emotion, while the Human Design Solar Plexus tells them whether that emotional script is actually running on its own wave in their design, or whether they are amplifying the waves of the people around them.
If you want the Western Astrology read on your emotional life, see The Moon in Western Astrology and the 12 Western Astrology Sun Signs.
The Solar Plexus Center is one of nine Centers in the Human Design BodyGraph. Each Center carries its own themes, its own Gates, and its own Defined or Undefined state in your specific chart. Together they describe the energetic architecture of your design.
- The Head Center, the source of inspiration and mental pressure
- The Ajna Center, the seat of conceptualization and thought
- The Throat Center, the mechanical exit for expression and manifestation
- The G Center, the seat of identity, love, and direction
- The Heart Center, also called the Will or Ego Center, the source of willpower
- The Solar Plexus Center, the seat of emotional awareness and feeling (this page)
- The Sacral Center, the engine of life force and creativity
- The Splenic Center, the seat of intuition, instinct, and immune awareness
- The Root Center, the source of adrenal pressure and drive
A Direct Transmission from MATTEEN
“Your Solar Plexus is not a problem. It never was. If your Solar Plexus is Defined, you run on a wave, and the wave is the design giving you clarity through time. Stop trying to decide at the top of the high or the bottom of the low. Ride it. Wait. The clarity is on the other side of the cycle, not inside it. If your Solar Plexus is Undefined, the emotions you are feeling may not be yours. Half of what you have been carrying belongs to someone else. Put it down. Ask whose feeling this is. Leave the rooms that are not yours to absorb. The world told you to be less emotional. The world was wrong. For half of you, emotion is the mechanism of decision. For the other half, emotion is a reading on the field. Neither one is something to suppress. Live the design you actually have, not the one the culture told you to want.”
