Channel 35-36 is the channel that turns the hunger for experience into a life of collecting them. The Solar Plexus Center generates the emotional pull toward something new. The Throat Center announces the change. The result is a person who needs to try everything once and is rarely satisfied sitting still.

If this channel is defined in your chart, you are wired to be a wanderer. You collect lives. You try multiple careers. You take the risk that other people talk themselves out of. You arrive at the new thing, get into it fully, and then at some point the voice rises in you that says “been there, done that, what’s next?” That voice is the channel doing exactly what it was built to do.

This is not flakiness. This is the design. The Channel of Transitoriness works by letting the emotional pull of Gate 36 move you into one experience after another, with Gate 35 announcing each arrival and each departure. The lesson is in the experience itself, including the emotional crisis that sometimes comes with it. The collection of experiences is the work. The story comes later.

Channel 35-36 is one of the 36 Channels in the Human Design BodyGraph. A Channel is formed when two specific Gates connect across two Centers. When both Gates are activated in your chart, the Channel is fully defined, which means both the Centers it connects also become Defined.

Channel 35-36 connects the Throat Center (the seat of expression) to the Solar Plexus Center (the seat of emotional awareness). The two Gates that form it are Gate 35 in the Throat and Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus. Together they produce the person who pursues experience for the sake of experience, who collects lives, and who turns the lived material into wisdom for the collective.

The Channel of Transitoriness belongs to the Collective Abstract Circuit, sometimes called the Collective Sensing Circuit. This is the part of Human Design that processes lived experience into meaning. Where the Collective Logic Circuit asks “what comes next?”, the Collective Abstract Circuit asks “what was that about?”. Channel 35-36 is the engine that goes out and lives the experience the rest of the Abstract circuit will eventually review. Without 35-36, the Abstract circuit has nothing to look back on.

A note on language. Human Design calls these 64 positions Gates, but you can also think of each Gate as a Gift. The 64 Gates in your chart are 64 archetypal gifts your design carries, drawn from the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. The Gene Keys system, developed by Richard Rudd, uses the same 64 patterns and calls them Gene Keys. Gate, Gift, and Gene Key all point to the same thing. We use the term Gate throughout because that is the primary Human Design term, but the reframe matters: a Gate is a Gift you are here to live, and a Channel is the relationship between two Gifts in your design.

Channel 35-36 runs between two Centers in the BodyGraph: the Throat Center and the Solar Plexus Center.

The Throat Center sits in the upper middle of the BodyGraph and is the center of expression, communication, and manifestation. It is the only Manifestation Center in the BodyGraph, which means every other Center must funnel through the Throat to reach the world. Gate 35 sits in the Throat Center.

The Solar Plexus Center sits on the right side of the BodyGraph and is one of three awareness centers. It is the seat of emotional awareness, feeling, and the wave of emotional intelligence that moves through time. Gate 36 sits in the Solar Plexus Center.

When both Gate 35 and Gate 36 are activated in your chart, Channel 35-36 is defined, and both the Throat and Solar Plexus Centers become Defined. This is what HD calls a “fully defined” channel: the link between the two Centers is mechanically live and produces the consistent pattern of emotionally driven experience-collecting along the Transitoriness theme.

If only one of the two Gates is activated, you have what HD calls a “hanging gate.” The full channel is not defined. The single gate still operates in you, but the relationship described by the channel is not running on its own. We cover what this means in The Electromagnetic Connection section below.

Gate 35, The Gate of Change (Throat Center)

Gate 35 sits in the Throat Center and carries the voice of progress. It is the expression that announces “been there, done that, what’s next?”. In the I Ching, this is Hexagram 35, Progress. The hexagram of forward movement, of advancement through new ground, of the person who has done something and is ready for the next thing.

In Channel 35-36, Gate 35 is the expression end. It is the place where the emotional pull of Gate 36 finds its voice and announces the change. The announcement is not boredom in the dismissive sense. It is the channel’s signal that one experience has been fully lived and the design is ready to move into the next one. The voice of Gate 35 makes the move public.

The Throat Center is the only Manifestation Center in the BodyGraph. Every other Center must funnel through the Throat to reach the world. Gate 35 is one of the eleven Throat Gates, each of which contributes a different mode of expression. Gate 35 contributes the voice of progress and change.

Gate 36, The Gate of Crisis (Solar Plexus Center)

Gate 36 sits in the Solar Plexus Center and carries the emotional pursuit of experience. It is the pull toward the new thing, the relationship, the move, the career, the adventure that has not yet been lived. In the I Ching, this is Hexagram 36, Darkening of the Light. The hexagram of moving through dark or difficult terrain, of the experience that includes the crisis as part of the teaching.

In Channel 35-36, Gate 36 is the emotional source. It is the place where the desire for the new experience originates, and it is also the place where the emotional crisis sometimes lands when the experience goes through its difficult phase. The crisis is not a malfunction. It is part of the curriculum the channel signed up for. The full lesson includes the dark stretch.

Because Gate 36 sits in the Solar Plexus, it carries an emotional wave. This wave matters for how decisions involving Channel 35-36 are made. We cover this in the Optimal Decision-Making section.

Every Channel in Human Design belongs to a Circuit. The Circuits describe the broader pattern of energy flow in the design and tell you what kind of relationship the Channel has to other people and to the collective.

Channel 35-36 belongs to the Collective Abstract Circuit, sometimes called the Collective Sensing Circuit. There are three main Circuits in Human Design:

• Individual Circuit carries unique knowing, mutation, and self-empowerment themes.
• Collective Circuit carries shared experience and pattern themes, divided into two streams: Logic (forward-looking patterns) and Abstract (backward-looking experience).
• Tribal Circuit carries support, resources, and bonding themes.

Channel 35-36 sits in the Abstract stream of the Collective Circuit. The Abstract stream is the part of human consciousness that learns through reviewing what has already happened. It is how culture remembers. It is how individuals process their personal history into meaning. Channel 35-36 is the gathering engine of that stream. Where Channel 64-47 produces the inner realization and Channel 11-56 produces the story that carries the meaning outward, Channel 35-36 is the one that actually lives the raw experience the rest of the circuit will look back on.

If you have this channel defined, your contribution to the collective is the lived material. You go and have the experience that other people will only ever read about. The varied life, the multiple careers, the relationships across very different terrain, the big risks: these are not detours. They are the work. The story of what was lived comes later, in retrospective. The living comes first.

When Channel 35-36 is activated in your chart, you unlock the following pieces of yourself:

• The wanderer who collects experiences. A built-in drive toward the new thing, the next chapter, the experience that has not yet been lived.
• The voice of progress. A Throat expression that announces what is next and signals when one chapter has been fully lived.
• The emotional pursuit of experience. The Solar Plexus pull that moves you toward the relationship, the move, the career, the adventure.
• Permission to be a Jack of All Trades. The mechanism that explains the varied resume, the multiple lives lived inside one lifetime, the refusal to specialize prematurely.
• A defined Throat and Solar Plexus. When the channel is activated, both Centers are Defined, which means your expression and your emotional awareness are consistent and predictable in pattern.
• Membership in the Collective Abstract Stream. Your contribution to the collective is the lived material the rest of the Abstract circuit will eventually review.

When Channel 35-36 is honored and lived correctly, it offers the following strengths to your design:

• A life rich in varied experience that most designs never accumulate
• The capacity to move into the new thing without the paralysis that holds others back
• An emotional honesty about when a chapter is finished
• The ability to convert a varied life into wisdom others can learn from
• A voice that signals progress and change clearly, without the need to justify it
• A contribution to the collective in the form of lived material that the Abstract circuit can review

When Channel 35-36 is forced or misunderstood, the following challenges show up:

• Being told your varied resume is a problem to be hidden and absorbing the judgment
• Forcing yourself to specialize before the channel has collected the experiences it was built to collect
• Treating the emotional crisis phase of an experience as evidence that the experience was a mistake
• Acting on the emotional wave at the wrong moment in the wave, which produces decisions that look like mistakes in hindsight
• Mistaking the “what’s next?” voice for ingratitude or flakiness
• Trying to settle down on a schedule that was set by other people instead of by your own design

The repair pattern is the reverse of the distortion. Honor the wanderer. Trust the varied life. Let the experiences accumulate. Let the emotional wave finish before deciding. The channel works at full power when the collecting is allowed, not when it is shut down in service of a stability someone else needs.

Everything in life is a function of decision-making. Every life unfolds through the decisions made within it.

Channel 35-36 includes the Solar Plexus Center, which changes the decision-making picture in an important way. For anyone whose chart has the Solar Plexus Defined, the authority is Emotional Authority. Emotional Authority means there is no truth in the now. There is only truth across the emotional wave. The pull of Gate 36 toward the new experience is real, but the pull at the peak of the wave is not the same signal as the pull at the bottom of the wave. The correct decision arrives only after the wave has cycled.

For Channel 35-36 specifically, this matters because the design is built to pursue experience. The pull is constant. The voice of Gate 35 is ready to announce the change. Without emotional clarity, the channel will jump into experiences too fast and out of them too fast, treating every spike of feeling as a green light. With emotional clarity, the channel still pursues the experience, but it does so after the wave has finished, which is the difference between a varied life and a chaotic one.

In Human Design, your Authority is for choosing. Channel 35-36 supplies the pull and the voice. Your Authority decides whether and when to act on them. Skipping the Authority step is how people with this channel end up with regret that was never necessary.

To work with Channel 35-36 correctly:

• Know whether the channel is defined in your chart. Generate your free chart and find out.
• If your chart has the Solar Plexus Defined, honor Emotional Authority on all major decisions, including the decisions to enter and exit experiences.
• Let the emotional wave cycle before announcing the change. The voice of Gate 35 can wait until the wave has finished.
• Trust the variety. The collected experience is the contribution. The story comes later.

This is the advice that gets handed to anyone whose life looks varied from the outside. Settle down. Stop changing jobs. Pick one thing. Stay put. Commit. Why can’t you just be happy where you are?

The advice is built for a different design than Channel 35-36. For you, the restlessness is not a defect to be fixed. The restlessness is the engine.

Channel 35-36 is mechanically designed to collect experiences. The pull of Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus Center keeps generating the emotional desire for the next thing. The voice of Gate 35 in the Throat Center keeps announcing when a chapter has finished. This is not immaturity. This is not commitment failure. This is the design working exactly as designed. The channel was built to live varied terrain. Telling it to settle down too early is telling it to short itself out.

The problem with “settle down” is that forcing it does not actually produce contentment. It produces frustration that no amount of stability cures. The channel that was supposed to be living the next chapter ends up grinding against the walls of the wrong chapter, and the grinding gets read as depression, as restlessness pathology, as a personality problem. The mechanism has not gone wrong. It is being held in a posture it was not built to hold.

What is actually correct for Channel 35-36: trust the wanderer. Let the experiences accumulate. The variety is not a delay before life begins. The variety is the life. Other designs are built for specialization. Yours is built for breadth. Honor your Emotional Authority on the timing of each change so the moves are clean, but do not let the cultural script tell you the moves themselves are the problem.

If you have this channel and you have been forcing yourself to stay put for years to satisfy other people’s idea of stability, the repair is not more discipline. It is permission to move when the wave clears. The story you will eventually be able to tell across the variety is the contribution your channel was designed to make.

If you have only Gate 35 activated (without Gate 36), or only Gate 36 activated (without Gate 35), the channel is not defined in your chart. The single gate still operates in you, but the full Transitoriness theme of the channel is not running on its own.

In Human Design, when you have one half of a channel, you are often drawn to people who carry the other half. The pull is called an Electromagnetic Connection. The relationship between you and the partner Gate person tends to feel magnetic, because together your charts complete the channel that neither of you can complete alone.

For Channel 35-36 specifically:

• If you have only Gate 35, you carry the Throat Center voice of progress and change but without your own emotional Solar Plexus Center source feeding it. You may feel drawn to people with Gate 36 because their emotional pull gives your voice something to announce.
• If you have only Gate 36, you carry the emotional pursuit of experience but without your own Throat to announce the change. You may feel drawn to people with Gate 35 because their voice gives your emotional pull a way out into the world.

This is not a relationship rule. It is a description of one of the magnetic forces operating underneath relationship chemistry. People can have great chemistry without channel electromagnetics, and channel electromagnetics on their own do not make a relationship correct or healthy. They are just one of the mechanical patterns the chart reveals.

Channel 35-36 in Human Design draws its archetypal pattern from two specific hexagrams in the I Ching, the ancient Chinese book of changes.

Gate 35 corresponds to Hexagram 35, Progress. This hexagram represents forward movement, advancement, and the arrival of the new. The voice of Gate 35 carries this energy of progress. The phrase “been there, done that, what’s next?” is the live expression of the hexagram. The hexagram teaches that progress is not a betrayal of where you came from. It is the natural movement of someone who has fully lived a chapter and is ready for the next.

Gate 36 corresponds to Hexagram 36, Darkening of the Light. This hexagram represents the passage through darkness, the experience that includes its own crisis. The emotional pull of Gate 36 carries this energy of pursuing experience even when the experience contains a dark stretch. The hexagram teaches that the darkening is part of the journey, not a sign that the journey was wrong. The crisis is a teacher inside the experience, not a verdict on it.

Together, the two hexagrams describe a process: emotional pursuit of the new experience including its crisis (36), and the voice that announces progress when the experience has been lived (35). The Channel of Transitoriness is the live version of this dynamic in your chart.

The Gene Keys system, developed by Richard Rudd, uses the same 64 patterns. Gene Key 35 carries the same theme of wanderlust transforming into adventure and ultimately into boundlessness. Gene Key 36 carries the same theme of turbulence transforming into humanity through the willingness to feel what experience actually contains. Reading the Gene Keys interpretation of these patterns often deepens the understanding of what the channel is doing.

Channel 35-36 is one of two Channels that connect the Throat Center to the Solar Plexus Center, the bridge between expression and emotional awareness in the BodyGraph.
